Derek White and the Monophobics is a project that I performed and recorded with from June 2007 through September 2008. The project began with Derek and I choosing some of his best songs to record as well as writing a few new ones. As soon as we started the recording project, we decided to put together a band to play shows with as well. We never got the chance to do any touring, but we did get the chance to play over 50 shows throughout the western PA area in the 13 months that we were active as a live group. The album is basically a compilation of tunes recorded by Derek and I with some help from Derek’s younger brother Mario.
Many of the tunes on this album were recorded in ways to best emulate a specific genre while maintaining originality, creativity, and often adding a little bit of humor. We kept everything as fun as possible making sure to throw a little bit of oddness into each song. At the end of Surfin’ the Allegheny, we kicked my guitar amp for the spring reverb “blast”. In Oh, Cataline, we stomped on huge pieces of wood while playing ride cymbals as you’d use them in a marching band. And in Bad News, we re-amp guitars repeatedly through tiny tube mic preamps for maximum fuzz and we made sure to use the famous “808 bomb” as much as possible.
